A Midwest Family's American Dream & Skating Legacy.
John and Ramona Muse built their first roller skating rink-at the current Skate West location-in West Des Moines in 1972. The family business became so successful it would later to expand to three additional rinks around the Des Moines-metro.
All six children in the Muse family went on to be individually ranked in national and international competition in artistic and speed skating. From the 1980’s to the early 2000’s, Des Moines was considered to be the roller skating capital of the world. Four Olympians, including Chad Hedrick, came to Des Moines to train with the Muse family.
John and Ramona Muse’s youngest son, Tony, currently presides over Skate West’s day-to-day operations. He has seen to the revitalization of a community gem, bringing back the nostalgia and class of one of America’s favorite past times: Roller Skating. Skate West is also home to roller hockey and roller derby teams, including three time national champion, Your Mom Men’s Roller Derby.
